Java, Indonesia – trash central
Java is filthy. The environmental awareness of the local Javanese rank the lowest I’ve ever seen. They throw trash everywhere! The train station and Cuckoo train had garbage scattered over the ground. The great monuments of Borobodur and Prambanan were competing against piles of trash left by tour groups. Morning risers hoping to catch a glimpse of Bromo celebrated the beauty of nature by throwing their rubbish on the adjacent volcano we were standing on. In contrast to other Southeast Asian countries where people generally throw their trash in one large pile, the Javanese toss their garbage with no order: randomly and arbitrarily. I hope they clean up the island and make its beauty more readily accessible rather than continue to have visitors search for it underneath all the trash.
